2026 Syllabus - Popular Voice
Students may perform selection(s) in the following genres: pop, pop/folk, R&B, soul, rock, alternative, indie, jazz or country. Selections should be covers from commercial artists in these genres.
Selections from Conservatory Canada Contemporary Idioms Voice lists and the RCM List C (Levels 1-6 and RCM List D (Levels 7-10) are eligible EXCLUDING musical theatre and operetta.
Selections that are NOT permitted:
Selections from Musical Theatre (both staged and non-staged), cabaret, revues, operetta and stand-alone songs in Musical Theatre style.
Rap and Hip Hop
Songs listed in the RCM or CC classical syllabi (Lists A and B from Levels 1-6, Lists A,B,C from Levels 7-10)
Songs from movie musicals and animated films
Students MUST choose selections that are age-appropriate with lyrics that are suitable for all audiences.
All selections MUST be sung from memory.
Participants will be judged on their choice of selections, interpretation, contrasting tempi, style, vocal quality and age appropriateness.
Please read the General Rules at the front of the Syllabus as well as those pertaining to the Musical Theatre (Voice) Section. TO AVOID DISQUALIFICATION, please read all rules CAREFULLY. RULE CHANGES MAY HAVE BEEN MADE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS OF THE PMF. Any questions are to be directed to the Festival office at (647) 282-7335 or email admin@peelmusicfestival.ca.
One original scoare of the music or purchased digital receipt MUST be presented to the adjudicator. If a competitor cannot secure the original music, then they should submit printed lyrics and show a receipt for purchase of the songs from either Apple Music, Spotify or Amazon. Accompanists (if using) may then play from a photocopy or transposition instead of from the original.
All selections must be accompanied. Accepted accompaniment can include live accompaniment by piano, guitar, ukelele or backtracks WITHOUT background vocals. Tracks can be purchased from www.karaoke-version.com ;
A sound system will be provided with a microphone at the venuew. Competitors have the option to bring their own microphone which should use a standard XLR cable.
Solo Popular Voice Class

Duets and Trios
Students are required to perform one selection only. The Adjudicator will take choice of repertoire into consideration. Memorization is optional, but strongly encouraged. Students must perform one selection in the following genres: pop, pop/folk, R&B, soul, rock/alternative (including grunge, punk, psychedelic), indie, jazz, blues or country. Selections should be covers from commercial artists in these genres.
Live accompaniment or pre-recorded accompaniment tracks are all accepted.
Adult and child duets - adult is defined as anyone over the age of 19 playing with a younger child.
Teacher and child duets - teacher is defined as anyone who is a music teacher (this would include parents/grandparents, etc, if they are teachers).

Small Ensembles
Groups of 4-15 members.
Each ensemble must perform 2 (two) selections in the following genres: pop, pop/folk, R&B, soul, rock/alternative (including grunge, punk, psychedelic), indie, jazz, blues or country. Selections should be covers from commercial artists in these genres. Selections must be musically contrasting. The Adjudicator will take choice of repertoire into consideration.
Live accompaniment or pre-recorded accompaniment tracks are all accepted.
Memorization is not required but is highly recommended.
