2026 Syllabus - Musical Theatre (Voice)
Please read the General Rules at the front of the Syllabus as well as those pertaining to the Musical Theatre (Voice) Section. TO AVOID DISQUALIFICATION, please read all rules CAREFULLY. RULE CHANGES MAY HAVE BEEN MADE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS OF THE PMF. Any questions are to be directed to the Festival office at (647) 282-7335 or email admin@peelmusicfestival.ca.
One copy of original music MUST be provided by the performer for the adjudicator. Accompanists MUST show their own original music to the clerk before the performance. Accompanists may then play from a photocopy or a transposition instead of from the original.
Internet Purchases: Competitors who purchase eligible music on the Internet must provide one receipt. Lead sheets are NOT acceptable. Full accompaniment versions must be purchased.
Only selections from a staged, theatre production may be used. The selection must be AGE appropriate. The selection MUST NOT be a medley of songs. REPEATS ARE STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. Competitors may use costumes and up to 2 (two) hand held props however, judging will be based solely on the musical presentation.
Competitors will sing ONE SELECTION, except for Concert Classes.
All selections must be accompanied. Please arrange for your own LIVE accompanist, as no recorded accompaniments will be permitted.
Solo Music Theatre Classes
Competitors must perform one selection from a staged music theatre production. Please note: Competitors must use the versions of songs as shown in the Production book/score and not arrangements or Junior show versions. Songs from musicals that have only been workshopped, songs from revues, cabarets or songs that are written as stand-alone songs in musical theatre style are NOT PERMITTED.

Music Theatre Concert Classes
Students must perform two (2) contrasting selections from the following:
• Fully staged musical theatre productions.
• Please note: Participants must use the versions of songs as shown in the production book/score and not arrangements or Junior show versions.
• Selections are NOT permitted from animated films and movie musicals.
Songs from musicals that have only been workshopped, songs from revues, cabarets or songs that are written as stand-alone songs in musical theatre style are NOT PERMITTED.

Music Theatre Duets and Trios
Competitors must perform one selection only. The Adjudicator will take choice of repertoire into consideration.
Memorization is optional, but strongly encouraged.
Competitors must perform one selection from a staged music theatre production.
Selections from STAGED Disney Productions - please note competitors must use the versions of songs as shown in the production book/score and not arrangements or Junior show versions.
Songs from musicals that have only been workshopped, songs from revues, cabarets or songs that are written as stand alone songs in musical theatre style are NOT PERMITTED.
For the purpose of this class:
Adult & Child duets: Adult is defined as anyone over the age of 19 playing with a younger child.
Teacher & Child: Teacher is defined as anyone who is a music teacher (this would include parents/grandparents, etc. if they are teachers).

• Songs from musicals that have only been workshopped (not fully staged)
• Stand-alone songs in musical theatre style (eg. Girl in 14G, Taylor the Latte Boy, Darryl is a Boy, songs from Smash television show, etc.)
• Songs written for but cut from staged musicals (eg. More to the Story from Shrek, Crossing a Bridge, Anastasia)
Instrumental cuts are permitted
Duets that can be performed as a solo, eg. I See the Light, Tangled
b) NOT permitted:
· Songs from fully-staged musical theatre productions
· Songs that were written first for staged musicals and that were later made into movies, eg. The Sound of Music, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Hamilton, In the Heights, Dear Evan Hansen, Wicked
· Selections from Junior show versions of musicals that have been cut or simplified.
· Selections that are primarily spoken patter (eg. Ya Got Trouble from The Music Man, Aaron Burr, Sir from Hamilton)
· Songs listed in the RCM or CC classical syllabi (Lists A and B from Levels 1-6; Lists A, B, C from Levels 7-10)
· Operetta/light opera selections (Gilbert & Sullivan, Romberg, Lehar, Johann Strauss)
